IFOAM Principles of Organic Agriculture

The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) passed the principles of organic agriculture at its General Assembly in September 2005 in Adelaide, Australia (principles).

Organic agriculture is based on the principles of health, ecology, fairness and care.

Organic Revision Project: Reports on integrating ethical values

The Organic Revision project was funded by the EU with the aim of supporting the further development of the EU Regulation 2092/91 on organic production.

As part of the project focus group discussions about values among organic and converting producers and other stakeholders were conducted in five European countries during 2004 and early 2005.

Conference on future research and competitiveness aspects of the European food industry

On 17-18 April 2007 the Directorate-General for Research of the European Commission organised a major Conference on the future research and competitiveness aspects of the European food industry, in Brussels (Charlemagne building), Belgium. The Conference was divided into four main sessions: Trends and Outlook in World Economics, Culture and Food; Drivers of Food demand and of the Market Today and Tomorrow; New Technologies for Food Production; Future Perceptions of Food. Commissioner Potocnikfor Science and Research and Commissioner Fischer Boel for Agriculture and Rural Development participated in the debate. (Info)

 

B) About the Foresight Process

Standing Commitee on Agricultural Research (SCAR): Foresight process

Under its mandate concerning strengthening coordination of research efforts in Europe, the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) launched a wide foresight process to allow an assessment of trends and their implications in considering the prospects for agriculture for 2015 – 2020 and to enable the necessary political answers to be found.The results of the whole foresight process undertaken by SCAR is also expected to provide inputs to a report on the coordination of agricultural research in Europe that the Commission wishes to transmit to the European Parliament and the Council in 2007/2008.

Technology Platforms

So called technology platforms have proven to be a powerful instrument to bring together a wide range of stakeholders identifying research priorities of a sector. Technology platforms are industry-led while also involving the financial world, public authorities, the research community and civil society. Their potential is well-acknowledged by the EU institutions.
